Update- Consultation report is out, recommendation is not to proceed with closure. Full report can be found at- http://mycouncil.oxfordshire.gov.uk/documents/s37772/CA_JUL1817R02%20-%20Chiltern%20Edge.pdf
This website is setup to support the campaign to save and keep open Chiltern Edge School. We will be adding more information about the campaign and events to save the school as and when it becomes available
We welcome the report and the recommendation not to proceed with formal consultation for closure, save our edge will continue to campaign and assist the school until its future is assured for generations to come.
The closure of Chiltern Edge School would have been a devastating loss to all the children in the school, to their families and to the local community it serves. It is a small school with a proud history of looking after it's pupils. House building continues relentlessly in Sonning Common and the surrounding areas. In the area, demand for school places at both primary and secondary level is high and will only increase further. Whilst the school is situated in Oxfordshire, it is near the county boundary and serves children from both Berkshire and Oxfordshire, as the catchment area covers both counties. Councillors may concern themselves about their own county, but to us the county boundary is merely an imaginary line on a map and should not influence the future of this school. A great number of children attend from north Reading and there is no suitable alternatives available for these pupils.
If the school had closed, Sonning Common would never have a secondary school of its own again. Children will be forced to take buses to other schools, in other people's communities. It then becomes difficult for them to join in after school activities as there is no transportation home.
